Amid-Thin W is a plant growth regulator used for thinning apples and pears to increase fruit size and quality. Its active ingredient is 1-Naphthaleneacetamide (0.84% NAA equivalent). It works by mimicking the natural plant hormone, 1-indolacetic acid. The product is applied via spray to orchards, with application rates varying based on the specific apple or pear variety (easy-to-thin, moderately difficult-to-thin, or difficult-to-thin) and the timing of application (Full Bloom or Petal Fall). Application rates are calculated in parts per million (ppm) and can be applied using 100, 150, or 300 gallons of water per acre. Handling requires specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes and socks, and chemical-resistant gloves. Users should avoid breathing dust and prevent contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. The label notes that weather conditions, such as wind speed (do not apply if winds exceed 10 mph) and temperature (avoid application if temperatures are below 50°F or above 85°F for certain varieties), significantly impact effectiveness and drift risk.
