SmartChoice HC is a high-concentration granular insecticide designed specifically for use on corn (field, sweet, popcorn, and seed corn). It contains 12.9% Bifenthrin, an organophosphate-like insecticide (though technically a pyrethroid) that acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor. It is used at planting for in-furrow application to control a variety of pests including corn rootworm larvae, wireworms, cutworms, seedcorn maggots, white grubs, grape colaspis, sugarcane beetles, and symphylans. The product is intended to be applied using the SMARTBOX system for controlled handling and application. Because it is a cholinesterase inhibitor, it carries significant toxicity risks to humans, avian, and aquatic invertebrates. Handling requires specific PPE, including long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes plus socks, and chemical-resistant gloves (such as barrier laminate, butyl rubber, nitrile, neoprene, natural rubber, PVC, or Viton). If exposure occurs, medical attention is critical; atropine is the emergency antidote for poisoning. Users must follow all Worker Protection Standard (WPS) requirements, including observing the 48-hour Restricted-Entry Interval (REI) under specific weather conditions.
